Wayne Rooney scored one and made two as Manchester United closed the gap on leaders Chelsea.
Rooney put the champions in front against Hull City in stoppage time at the end of the first half with a close-range poacher's finish.
Rooney also played a part in the Tigers' equaliser on the hour with a weak backpass which ultimately led to Rafael fouling Jozy Altidore. Craig Fagan stroked home the resulting penalty.
The home side pushed hard for a winner but were hit on the break as Rooney played a killer ball across goal forcing Andy Dawson to turn into his own net on 73 minutes.
Rooney then played a clever and unselfish pass across goal to set up Dimitar Berbatov for the third eight minutes from time as United leapfrogged Arsenal back to second place in the Barclays Premier League, just two points behind Chelsea.
