The Latics have accrued 14 points from 12 matches in what has been an up and down season so far.

Joy at superb 2-0 and 3-1 wins against Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively has been tempered by big losses to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Portsmouth.

But Martinez, whose side sit 13th in the Barclays Premier League, has been pleased with many of the displays so far this season.

points tally

He said: "I don't look at points. We lost at Everton to a penalty in the last minute, so you can't look at just the points tally.

"I am far more interested in the performances and the good performances we have had have been exceptional.

"In that respect, I feel we are probably where we deserve to be in terms of our performances.

"I feel it was always going to be this way for the first half of the campaign, simply because there was such a big turnaround in playing staff."

Martinez and his men travel to Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
